- Nvidia's new open-source AI models, Ising, are designed to accelerate quantum computing adoption.
- Quantum computing stocks like IonQ, D-Wave, and Rigetti Computing have seen significant gains this week.
- The U.S. government and tech giants are heavily investing in quantum computing, viewing it as a transformative technology.
Good News Everyone, Quantum Leaps in Stock Prices
As Professor Hubert J. Farnsworth, purveyor of fine inventions and scientific breakthroughs (mostly accidental), I've observed a curious phenomenon. The stock prices of companies dabbling in the quantum realm have inexplicably surged. It appears Nvidia, those rapscallions of graphical processing, have unleashed something called "Ising," an open-source AI model designed to, as they say, 'accelerate the adoption of quantum computing.' Preposterous, I say. Like inventing Smell-O-Scope but for money.
Nvidia's Quantum Gambit
Nvidia's Jensen Huang claims that "AI is essential to making quantum computing practical" and that Ising will transform "fragile qubits to scalable and reliable quantum-GPU systems." It sounds like marketing malarkey to me, but who am I to question the whims of the market? Perhaps they've finally figured out how to make a decent quantum toaster. I must investigate for the sake of science AND the future of our planet. However, perhaps this has to do with the Abduction Case Solved Suspect Detained in Savannah Guthrie's Mother Disappearance... Coincidence? I think not.
World Quantum Day? Oh My Glob!
Apparently, there's a "World Quantum Day" on April 14th, chosen because 4.14 represents the first three digits of the Planck constant. Frankly, it sounds like an excuse for scientists to avoid real work. But whatever, I am a scientist, that is what I do best, along side being a professor and inventor.
Quantum Computing: The Next Big Thing or Another Smell-O-Scope?
Proponents claim quantum computing will revolutionize drug discovery and solve problems that are impossible for everyday computers. Governments and tech giants are throwing money at it like it's going out of style. Microsoft, Alphabet, Amazon, and even IBM are all trying to build their own quantum computers. I've seen this before. Hype, hype, and more hype. Remember the internet? I do. I invented it.
Market Volatility: A Familiar Foe
Of course, the quantum computing market is small and prone to wild swings. Many stocks are down year-to-date. D-Wave and Rigetti have taken a beating, proving that even the smartest investors are occasionally as dumb as a bag of hammers. Still, there is promise but I would advice to be careful and consider all your options.
IonQ's Quantum Achievements
IonQ managed to link two remote quantum computers and secured a contract with DARPA. Linking two computers? Groundbreaking. My Fing-Longer is far more impressive. I use it to push buttons that are far away and it is far more reliable than these experiments.
