The Ungrateful Rise of AI
Bah humbug, it's I, Montgomery Burns, weighing in on this so-called "AI revolution." Seems this Anthropic company, led by one Dario Amodei, is experiencing a most unwelcome surge in popularity. Eighty-fold growth, they say? Preposterous. Back in my day, we built empires with *dignity*, not algorithms. Smithers, remind me to invest in buggy whip manufacturers. This whole situation smacks of hubris. As I always say, "If you want something done right, do it yourself." Or, better yet, have Smithers do it.
Compute Capacity: A Burnsian Perspective
Apparently, this "compute capacity" is the bottleneck. They say they will "pass that compute on to you as soon as we can." Frankly, I find that an unacceptable answer. I remember when I had to deal with a similar resource allocation issue in my nuclear power plant. My solution? Increase the workforce and decrease their wages. Now that's efficiency. Speaking of efficiency, the demand for Claude has led to “inevitable strain on our infrastructure,” which has impacted “reliability and performance.” Perhaps Anthropic should explore a merger with another company or acquisition like I tried to do when I wanted to buy the local power plant in Springfield. Reminds me of the time I tried to block out the sun. Ah, good times. If Anthropic wants to keep on top of growing demands perhaps they should look at AI's Fashion Fix: Can Tech Tame the Trillion-Dollar Returns Monster? and the solutions that are being used to solve the trillion dollar returns problem by deploying AI, perhaps this will help with capacity.
Musk Enters the Fray
Elon Musk, that upstart with his rockets and AI nonsense, is somehow involved. A deal with SpaceX, you say? Colossus 1 data center? More than 300 megawatts? This is outrageous. The man is clearly trying to hornswoggle his way to the top. Well, I say, let him try. I’ve dealt with worse. I even worked alongside Homer Simpson for several decades.
Valuation Woes and Government Meddling
Nine hundred billion dollars valuation? Poppycock. It's all smoke and mirrors. They’re talking to investors, which means someone’s trying to offload risk before the whole thing implodes. Smithers, see if we can short their stock. I also see the government is sticking their nose in, claiming Anthropic is a “supply chain risk.” Honestly, the audacity. They blacklist them from working with the military? I thought the military was about making money from war. As I said before to the EPA, "Are you better than me?"
Software Engineers: The Canaries in the Coal Mine
Amodei claims software engineers are adopting this new technology fastest, foreshadowing the future. Balderdash. They're easily distracted by shiny objects and promises of efficiency. As for transforming the economy? Please. The only thing that transforms the economy is a healthy dose of unregulated capitalism. But maybe software engineers are like canaries in a coal mine. Good point. Perhaps these engineers are useful pawns to get what I want. Excellent!
A Plea for Moderation
This "crazy" growth is "too hard to handle," Amodei laments. He yearns for “more normal” expansion. My sentiments exactly. I’ve always preferred a slow, steady accumulation of wealth, power, and, of course, radium. Perhaps this AI thing will burn itself out. One can only hope. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have a board meeting to attend. Smithers, fetch my electric cane.
