- Apple's iPhone shipments in China jumped 20% in Q1, despite a 4% overall market decline.
- Huawei and Apple were the only major vendors to report growth, with Huawei up 2%.
- Chinese consumers perceive Apple products as offering long-term value, lasting at least three years.
- Rising memory chip prices have prompted other smartphone vendors to increase prices, impacting sales.
Holy Crap Lois iPhone Sales Are Up
Alright, so apparently, Apple's doing better in China than I am at keeping my pants on after three beers at The Drunken Clam. These eggheads at Counterpoint Research say that iPhone sales went up 20% in the first quarter. Twenty percent. That's like, almost a whole extra Chris's worth of iPhones. And get this, it's happening even though the overall market is down like my chances of winning a beauty pageant against Lois.
Huawei and Apple the Cool Kids Again
So, it's not all about Apple. Apparently, Huawei is also doing pretty well. They’re up 2%, which is like, uh, one-tenth of an iPhone if my math from Quahog Community College is right. But everyone else is apparently tanking because chips are costing more than Petercopter fuel these days. Speaking of which, maybe I should invest in Apple, or maybe a lifetime supply of Pawtucket Patriot Ale. I hear there is a serious issue of Market Turmoil: Will Trump's Deadline Spark a Truce or Fuel a Stagflation Crisis and that I should probably be worried. Eh, maybe I should just call Herbert.
Three Years Huh That's Longer Than My Last Job
These guys from Counterpoint Research, especially this fella named Ivan Lam, are saying that people think iPhones last at least three years. Three years. That's longer than I lasted at the happy-go-lucky toy factory after Mr. Weed died. Apparently, that's good value for the Chinese consumer. Me? I'm still rocking my rotary phone and a landline. Who needs an iPhone when you have the thrill of arguing with telemarketers?
Huawei Dominates But Apple Is Catching Up
So, Huawei is still the top dog over there with 20% of the market, but Apple is snapping at their heels with 19%. It's like that time I tried to out-eat Joe at the clam-eating contest. Close, but no cigar. I wonder if you can eat iPhones? Probably not healthy, but what is these days?
Budget Phones Taking a Hit
Apparently, cheaper phones are getting more expensive, so people are probably thinking twice before buying them. Kind of like when I think twice before going to the buffet. Nah, just kidding. I never think twice about food. Xiaomi took a major tumble, probably because they couldn't afford to bribe Brian to write a positive review. Oppo and Honor are also down, but Vivo is somehow up, thanks to the Lunar New Year. I always miss the Lunar New Year. Is that when the moon gets extra cheesy?
More Trouble Ahead or Another Opportunity for Apple
This Lam fella is predicting more problems in the future, especially with Chinese brands raising prices. But he also thinks Apple and Huawei will do relatively better. So, good for them. Maybe I should ask Stewie to invent me an iPhone that turns into a beer-dispensing robot. Now that's innovation. Giggity.
